The much-awaited ICC Champions Trophy begins in England on June 1, 2017. The action-packed tournament features top eight teams of the world and also has a India-Pakistan fixture, early in the tournament. West Indies, after not meeting the ranking the cut-off, are not part of the tournament this year. After a lot of drama about their participation, India finally released their squad and are set to take part in the competition. Six warm-up games precede the opener and will feature India participating in two of those, one against New Zealand and the other against Bangladesh. India are the defending champions and will look to do the same under Virat Kohli. They begin their campaign on June 4 against Pakistan in Birmingham.
The eight teams participating in the tournament are England, Australia, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The sixth edition of Champions Trophy will be held at three venues across England with the opener being played between England and Bangladesh. The eight teams are divided into two groups of four teams each.
Group A consists of four teams, namely Australia, England, New Zealand and Bangladesh. Australia are two-time champions of the tournament while New Zealand won the tournament’s first edition. England and Bangladesh are yet to win this tournament.
Group B consists of India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. While India are the defending champions, they shared the title with Sri Lanka in 2000. Pakistan and South Africa have never won this ICC tournament.
After the group stage matches, which end on June 12, the two semi-finals of the tournament will be played on June 14 and 15 while the final will be played on June 18.
